Must-Haves

Let’s talk about our workout playlists for a minute.

Is anyone else like me where it is totally not a good representation of the music you normally listen to?

Sure. There are songs in my regular rotation that make it to the workout playlist. But there are also songs on there I most likely don’t want my friends to know I paid $1.29 to download.

Lucky for you, as I continue on with my half marathon training (6 miles on Saturday- holla’!), I don’t seem to have much shame and have decided to share a list of the Top 10 Songs that make every single running playlist I make:

1. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers. It’s catchy. And truth be told, this is my official “happy song” and in my top 10 favorite songs OF ALL TIME (dun dun dunnnn). I can’t not stop life for a second to be cheerful while listening- no matter what kind of crap I’m dealing with. If you don’t already have your own happy song, you’re totally allowed to borrow it until you do. You’re welcome.

2. On To The Next One by Jay-Z. Gotta feel balla’. Especially somewhere near the middle or end of a run. Sometimes I imagine J sitting on the side of the race with a 40 in his hands and a Yanks hat over his eyes (races are pretty early in the morning) saying “run yo’ ass off, girl”. It’s just what I need. Thanks boo. ;)

3. See You Again by Miley Cyrus. The first of many embarrassing tunes to grace the ‘pod. However, I’m totally guilty of playing this song whenever because I just sorta like it. Even if she was maybe 16 when it was recorded and she sings like she smoked a pack a day since birth. What gives?

4. What Doesn’t Kill You by Kelly Clarkson. This is a relatively new addition. But she’s been a staple in my list for years. Something about that slightly bitter yet empowering rant of a song that she can produce time and time again. I hear ya, Kelly. Guys do sometimes suck, don’t they?

5. A Favor House Atlantic by Coheed and Cambria. Do you know much about these dudes? Yeah… me either. However, my ex-boyfriend in college downloaded this to my music library maybe 8 years ago (omg- how old am I?!?!). The song has stuck around. Much unlike the boy. Ah well. I got a few good tunes out of it, a band t-shirt and all of his N64 games. So uh… winning? (please don’t tell him about the N64 games- I heart Zelda)

6. All The Things I’ve Done by The Killers. Much like my girl Kelly Clarkson, The Killers happen to always make it on my playlist some way or another. This just happens to be the tune of theirs I’m feelin’ as of late.

7. I Want You Back by N*Sync. There really isn’t an explanation necessary, is there? Good… because I don’t have one. But I do have to admit I also know the little “dance” to this song. And even broke it out during a wedding dance once. I am not ashamed.

8. Ass Back Home by Gym Class Heroes. Another new one that I’m sure to kill by playing it on repeat 100 times and then hearing it another 1,000 on the radio. I never learn.

9. The Distance by Cake. How cliché, right? Funny thing is we used to listen to the entire album (Fashion Nugget) on the way to track meets in junior high. It was always super cool if you were the one in the back of the bus that got to hold the cd player blaring the music. Now that I think about it, I feel this was Tom Sawyer/fence painting trickery. Because who wants to have to hold the cd player the entire time? Everyone else was able to socialize and, I dunno, use both of their hands…

10. Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind. Yet another shout out to past Amy. And another song in my all-time top 10. I’m pretty sure almost everyone within a 20-year age range can sing this song by heart.

So there you have it. 10 songs guaranteed to be played during any race I do in the next year or so.

I know. I’m weird.

What’s your most embarrassing song on your iPod?

It’s possible mine would be some old-school Enrique. Because it’s awesomely bad.

I can be your hero, baby…

  1. Aaaa I love that Miley Cyrus song, it makes its way onto my playlists more often than not.

Most embarrassing song? Probably Stars Are Blind by Paris Hilton. What? It was catchy for like 5 minutes that one summer.

  2. I love love love that song by The Proclaimers! The most embarrassing song on my playlist is probably a song from the movie “Newsies” – I try to justify it in that a young Christian Bale was in the movie…… :)

  3. A Favor House Atlantic and The Distance are also on my playlist :)

My most embarassing is a Chipettes song, Girls of Rock N Roll. It has the perfect BPM for running so don’t judge me!

  4. Cake is never a cliche…I know, I’m old, but I love them! Tony and I actually saw them in a small concert (the kind where you actually sit on the floor and the band plays right in front of you like you’re in grade school)…it was the best concert I have ever been too. Oh and playlist are supposed to be a little silly. I have the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge on my ipod still. I hope you have a great day lady!

  5. Love it! I have the Miley Cyrus song too…the beat is awesome when running. I also listen to Back That Ass Up a lot when the miles get tough…haha!

  6. LOVE the list. Umm, except the Miley. I have seen Coheed and Cambria! They were a great show back in college.

Also – I spent far too manyhours playing Zelda on N64 in college. FAR too many.

  7. Vishnu decided to be cute one day and put the Seseme Street theme song on my iPod without me knowing it. You can imagine what a surprise that was!

  8. WHY do I not have any NSYNC on my iTunes?? Wow, this is a huge oversight. I would also add, Bye, Bye, Bye, while we’re at it. Love Kelly Clarkson’s new album too!

  9. I thought I was the only one still playing N’Sync on my running playlists–I’m glad I’m not the only one :)

  10. My most embarrassing part of my current workout playlist is probably just the obscene amount of Michael Jackson alone. Jackson 5, 80′s Michael, even a little 90′s Michael. What can I say, he’s a smooth criminal.

  11. So, lately my workout playlist has been Today’s Country station on Pandora. haha.

  12. Oh, I have some ridiculous songs on my workout playlist and I love it. Remember the Venga Boys? Yah – they’re on there. And Eye of the Tiger. Just try not getting pumped up when you listen to that song, it can’t be done.
I also sing along to it when I’m running. A friend saw me a little while ago and said I looked super focused – I was actually just rapping. That was my gangster face. I didn’t tell her that.

  13. I definitely listen to different stuff to get me through a run. The Flaming Lips and Modest Mouse are there from my normal day-to-day music, but some pretty embarrassing pop rap jams make it onto the ‘pod as well. Whatever gets the job done, right?

  14. Dude that cake song ROCKS for long runs, I don’t care if it’s cliche. And my playlist is like, horrible. As in like, I’d be embarrassed if my mom heard it.

What can I say? I workout best to dirty rap music ;) haha

  15. If I may, the one song I can’t quit on my workout playlists, and have been rocking out to for well over a year now, is LilWayne/Drake’s Right Above It. I frigging love that song. My brother and I always pick a random rap/hip hop song and deem it our “jams”, and that’s easily mine. I’d add it- it gets ya going.

A fun game I heard about on my favorite radio station is called iPus…well, it’s a word that i hate that rhymes with “wussy”; basically you put your iPod on shuffle and see how many songs it takes until you are embarrassed. They play it with celebrities sometimes; sadly, Bradley Cooper did not have his iPod last time he was there. I play it sometimes in my car; you’d be surprised how embarassed you can get even if you’re alone! I have a whole lot of hannah montana/90s disney movie songs / musicals. Mixed in with metallica, lil wayne, and zepplin. And the backstreet boys. I’m a musical mutt.

  16. Hilarious- some of those are definitely on mine, too. That Gym Class Heroes song is legit a really good song, I have your back on that. The Miley thing, though? We might have to talk about that one. ;)

  17. Wow way to admit some of those! I’m with you on 3rd Eye Blind and Cake. The most embarassing song is probably selena gomez “love song” and the amount of plays it got this summer… :\

  18. AHaha!! I love your songs….Pussy Cat Dolls – When I Grow Up..that’s mine. I LOVE JayZ when working out!!!

    xxoo

  19. I’m never ashamed of 3rd Eye Blind. However, I have some skeletons hanging in my iPod. For instance, Party in the USA by Miley and SheWolf by Shakira. Yup… I admit it. Whatever gets ya through the miles.

  20. You had me at Miley. When I run it’s like a bubblegum pop princess threw up all over my itunes. I don’t care, the more poppy, the more BritBrit and RhiRhi the better. Spotify would show people the songs you were listening to, I quickly had to remove that feature.

  21. I love working out to Girl Talk. Good mix of songs I know, upbeat, keeps me going. I also love me some good pop music from the old days (a.k.a. when I was in high school). Guilty pleasure.

  22. I haven’t run outside since early November, and I’m guessing I haven’t updated my playlist since July, so I’d go with a no on that one ;) Treadmill running=TV watching for me.

  23. No playlist is complete without some type of Nsync…and old school Britney..oh and some 98 degrees. Okay, obviously there is a trend in my playlist haha.

Love the get your ass back home song. It’s on repeat on my ipod..I am afraid I am gonna break the damn thing from playing the same song over and over again

  24. Besides Cake and Coheed And Cambria, this list is my worst nightmare. But it’s your list, rock on with it! My most embarrassing song on my ipod is “Mine” by Taylor Swift. Shut up, I like that song. It’s cute!

  25. I have Anita Baker on my iPhone. And Carly Simon. With a little Billy Joel mixed in. Totally random.

Now I’m going to have that 500 miles song stuck in my head all day. Thank you Amy!!

  26. Hero is on my playlist too. And lots and lots of Hanson. Oh yes.

  27. I might have to throw Miley back on my running playlist.

  28. Great songs – thanks for sharing! My playlist (http://www.mainelyrunning.com/2012/01/little-musical-help.html) will now have some great updates :) The Beibs is definitely the most embarassing thing on my playlist since it’s been a really long time since I was 13!

  29. [...] really enjoyed posts in list form as of late. It’s organized. It’s efficient. It’s perfect for my OCD [...]

  30. [...] on Friday. The rest from the gym was necessary. And so was the rocking out to their version of my happy song, “500 [...]
